Directions for making little dresses

Little Dresses for Africa

1. Cut ¼ inch off top of sewn edge of a pilow case, removing the top seam

2. Fold pillow case in half, lengthwise.

3. Cut out armholes so they will be the same on both sides (usually a 6 inch half circle)

4. Fold down about ¾ inch and stitch casing.

5. Slide about 6 inches of elastic (1/2 inch or less width) into casing which will gather the material.
Sew each end of casing, securing the elastic ends as well. Do this for front and back of dress.

6. Finish armholes with single or double fold bias tape, leaving 10 to 12 inches at ends to tie at the shoulders.
I found that 36 inches for each armhole is sufficient, thus needing 2 yards of bias tape per dress.

7. One cut out section from the armhole, top-stitch a pocket on right side of dress front.

*This is just a suggested pattern. Any simple dress is fine. Please avoid zippers and buttons as they require too much repair.
